This is about building a shelter for a rainy day as John Wooden said in his seven point creed. I could fool you and make you believe that you are benefiting yourself by doing a bunch of crazy exercises but from what I’ve seen it won’t help you in 5 or 10 or 20 years. You have to build a base and work on the fundamentals of success in fitness. Once you have that, then the options are endless. If things go haywire you can always go back to the basics and get back on track.

Most trainers are too focused on looking cool or looking tough in the current moment and that can be very dangerous, because life - as you may know - is a long term journey. Focusing on the now with no intention on how it will affect your future is stupid. Everything you do now should be a part of a plan that you hold as to how you want your future to look. Crazy cool workouts don’t necessarily mean crazy cool results.

Trainers who focus only on that hour of training are missing the point. Workouts that use a bunch of wicked looking equipment and that ‘help the core more’ are just juvenile ways of fooling you into believing that you are actually doing something beneficial.

The real question that trainers need to ask themselves before they attempt to take peoples lives into their own hands is this:

Am I in the business of truly helping people live better lives or am I in the business of screwing people over?

All will say yes to the first part of that question but most will actually act as if they were saying yes to the second part.

Orison Sweet Marden wrote in his book An Iron Will (1901), "It is the iron grip that takes and holds. I’ve realized that to make a BIG difference in this world you have to surround yourself with, help, and mentor the one’s who are willing to create and build the change you seek. The rest are just a waste of time.
